is a novelist. His works include The Summer Guest (2004) and Mary and O’Neil (2001), which won the PEN/Hemingway Award and the Stephen Crane Prize, both for best debut fiction of the year. In 2005, he was named “Houston’s Ultimate Novelist” by the editors of the Houston Chronicle for their Ultimate Houston Guide.
